Balcony Gardening

One of the things I miss most about having a proper yard is seeing what will come back in the garden after the winter.  With a balcony garden it is often a mystery I find.  This year I was very excited to see some fun new life growing in the gardens.

Raspberries Growing in Containers

Pumpkin Seedlings from another Pumpkin

Pumpkin seedlings starting from M2′s Halloween Pumpkin

Also included in the top photo is our strawberry plant that decided to spread out and come back!  We are really hoping for some berries from both the raspberries and strawberries.  When I decided to go with raspberries in the containers I could not find any articles on how they would do, so far I’d say pretty good?   There are also some onions that started to go to grow in the cupboard, I decided to plant them and see what happens.

Now those pumpkin seedlings are a very unexpected discovery.  M2 received two pumpkins this year that she decorated for Halloween.  She carved up one that we received from the local farmer market and then her class went on a field trip to a pumpkin patch, to pick pumpkins and well she decided she just wanted to colour that pumpkin and I was to make some pumpkin pie…I forgot!

But I did remember to put the pumpkins out in the garden to compost.  Apparently Pumpkins need cold to germinate and so alas now we have some more pumpkin seedlings to share this year!  This time they are orange pumpkins.

This week we will plant some seeds for more veggies, a few seedlings and some plants to attract butterflies.  Including Milkweed, which may or may not grow this year as I should have had the seeds germinating in the fridge about 3 months ago.

So how is your garden growing?

You can reuse that?

Anyone who follows this blog knows I love Etsy.  I am always amazed by the talented artists who sell on there and the ideas behind those items.  The below treasury is just such a case.  It showcases a few of the reusable items you can buy on Etsy.  Items that by using, you would create a huge green impact.  A search for reusable items on Etsy comes up with lots and lots of ideas, these are just a few that happen to be from Canadian sellers.

So what is your favourite reusable item?

Ways We Played

Are you looking for fun new ways to play this May?  Perhaps some screen free ideas for this week?  I’ve rounded up some of the fun ways we’ve played (and I blogged about) for you to consider adding to your play list…I am hoping to find some time to blog about a few other ways we’ve played this month, but also looking forward to playing more which of course requires less blogging and more playing!

Too be perfectly honest more often then not the kids don’t need anything special to play with, just need to be given time to be free to play.  It frightens me a little to say that some kids need permission to play, or even time built into their schedule for play.  Play is value added into a child’s life, right from day one. It could quite possibly be one of the best gifts you’ll ever give your child!

Tell me what is your favourite way to play with your children?

Let’s Play In May

Let’s get outside and play this May, let’s encourage our children (or the little people in our life) to play, to just be at peace with their imaginations.  To discover their imaginations!  Hopefully this treasury gives you some ideas to help encourage play in your world.

The next pumpkin

I almost forgot to show you all the pumpkin that Great Grampa grew for M2 from  her pumpkins last year.  He was the only person from all her plants to get a pumpkin to grow, she was so excited she saved the pumpkin for us to grow again this year.

growing a pumpkin in a pumpkin

Mama is a little behind on the garden this year, so we better get that one cut open and start them growing!  Although we may save a little to make some pumpkin pie also…

So how is your garden growing?

Jenn

p.s. cool pumpkin facts, pumpkins are native to North America and pumpkin pie was originally cooked in the pumpkin!
